"The Surviving Sepsis Campaign, an initiative of the European Society of
Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM), the International Sepsis Forum (ISF), and the
Society of Critical Care Medicine, was developed to improve the management,
diagnosis, and treatment of sepsis. ISF has officially withdrawn from the SSC
however, ESICM and SCCM continue to collaborate maintaining this website and the
database so that all associated materials remain as resources. This global
effort to reduce death from sepsis is unprecedented. The Institute for
Healthcare Improvement worked with campaign leadership to lend expertise in
reinforcing the campaign as a quality improvement initiative."

Outcomes of patients undergoing early sepsis resuscitation for
cryptic shock compared with overt shock
Puskarich M et al. Resucitation 2011; 82: 1289-1293
"Severe sepsis with cryptic shock carries a mortality rate not significantly different from that of overt septic shock. These data suggest the need for early aggressive screening for and treatment of patients with an elevated serum lactate in the absence of hypotension."
