“Take Home Points
  • Patients with UGIB can decompensate rapidly. Establish two large-bore IVs, and begin resuscitation as quickly as possible.
  • Secure the airway early, and be prepared for a difficult airway.
  • A through history and physical exam will help with the risk stratification of UGIB.
  • Risk stratification scores can help identify who is low risk, intermediate risk and high risk.
  • Patients with non-variceal bleeds who are low-risk can be discharged home with proper follow-up.
  • Patients with variceal bleed carry a high mortality and need to be admitted for endoscopy.”
